In 1950 he was on a survey crew working for the Bureau of Land Management at thd Dugway Proving Grounds when a man came out and told him that he had been ordered to active duty because war had broken out in Korea. He had been in the State Guard during World War II. Hart discusses warfare, life in Tokyo, civilian life in England, and various teaching positions at the University of Washington, Brigham Young University, University of California at Berkeley, and Arizona State. He arrived the day the peace treaty was signed aboard the USS Missouri. After promotion to lieutenant junior grade he received orders to Pearl Harbor. He enrolled in an intensive Japanese language course and was invited to enter a program sponsored by the US Navy.
